CPW to Release Copper Creek Pack
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has announced plans to re-release the Copper Creek wolf pack, including the breeding female and her four pups, alongside up to 15 wolves captured in British Columbia between January and March 2025. Ranchers argue this move violates the state's wolf recovery plan, which discourages relocating wolves involved in livestock depredations.
The Copper Creek pack has been in captivity since August after being linked to livestock conflicts in Grand County. The breeding male died shortly after capture due to prior injuries, leaving the female to care for the pups. Despite controversy, officials say re-releasing the female with her pups is crucial for their survival and hunting development. 🐾
"This is an agency decision… to give the pack the best chance for survival," said Travis Duncan of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. All wolves will be GPS-collared and monitored.
Ranchers remain concerned, citing evidence of the pack’s involvement in livestock deaths. However, officials argue there is no conclusive proof the pups participated. "The wolf recovery plan calls for flexibility," Duncan added, emphasizing unique circumstances.
What do you think? Should the Copper Creek pack be given another chance in the wild, or is this decision too risky? Let’s discuss below! 🐺👇
