California’s Third New ‘Diamond Wolf Pack’ Discovered

🐾 Exciting news for wolves in California! 30 pups have been born in Californias so far, and a new wolf pack—the Diamond Pack—has been confirmed in California's Sierra Valley 🌲, just 50 miles north of Lake Tahoe! This is the third new pack documented this year and the ninth pack overall in the state. 🌟 Wolves in California have made the largest single-year population increase in a century. This is an incredible comeback after a hundred years of absence and we couldn’t be more excited. 🐺💚 The Diamond Pack supposedly consists of a single male-female pair (officials expect them to produce offspring very soon). The female is a dispersed member of the Lassen Pack, while the male’s origins are still to be determined. The two have been moving together for six months!

Their presence highlights conservation success but also raises challenges with nearby ranching and urban areas like Reno. Will they expand further south to Lake Tahoe? Groups like @thecaliforniawolfproject are working hard to better understand the behaviors and movements of California’s packs - so as to better protect them and reduce human-wildlife conflict. Their goal is to better understand the “economic, ecological, and social impacts of wolf recolonization in the state”. 🌄 “It is exciting to see wolves back in California, but there are a lot of questions about where they fit amongst a rapidly changing landscape with new challenges for agencies and livestock producers,” said UC Berkeley wildlife management professor and CAWP co-lead Arthur Middleton. “We hope our growing team can provide new support to those interested in and impacted by the state’s growing wolf population.” Stay tuned as California’s wolves recover in their rightful territories! 🐾✨
